When taking an Alaska cruise there are some things that you should make sure to bring with you and also some things that you need to purchase for your cruise. By making sure that you have brought all the things that are needed you can relax and enjoy your vacation. Many of these things will seem like common sense to an experienced cruiser but for first time cruises these things can get over looked in the excitement of taking an Alaska cruise.

First off when booking your cruise make sure that you purchase Travel Protection Insurance. This insurance will protect you in many ways. An Alaska cruise is usually booked well in advance and no one knows what life has in store, so something can come up forcing you to cancel your cruise. With Travel Protection Insurance you are protected in the event that you have to cancel due to an illness, major injury or death of you, a family member, partner or even your traveling partner. This insurance also protects your investment in the event of a natural disaster or even terrorism. Travel Protection Insurance goes beyond just protecting your investment in the event the cruise is cancelled for one of the above reasons. Travel Protection Insurance also protects you when on a cruise. In the event of illness or injury on the cruise your Travel Protection Insurance will pay for your medical treatment. Your luggage will also be protected under this plan.

Make sure to have with you at all times either a passport, notarized copy of your birth certificate and a picture id. Alaska is part of the United States but when taking an Alaska cruise you will end up during part of your cruise in Canada. It is during this time that you must have your proper proof of US citizenship on you.

Bring with you the obvious proper clothing for a cruise. Proper clothing for a cruise are those that are considered to be resort casual and also formal for the formal nights. Swimsuits and such should be brought for times spent in the pool or Jacuzzi. Also allow for the weather in Alaska and bring fall/winter clothes with you. Dressing for the weather includes layering your clothes on. As the weather is changing you can remain comfortable at all times. Hiking boots should also be brought along so that you can take part in certain shore excursions if you booked any.

Most cruise lines place hotel size soaps and shampoos in your room. It is recommended though to bring your own personal soaps and shampoos. With those items you need to include razors, shave cream, lotions, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Keep it to all toiletries items that you would take with you on an extended vacation. The length of your trip and the amount of people in your party will determine the sizes and how much of each item to bring.

Spending money is also recommended so that you can dine while in a port of call or take in some shopping. When traveling on an Alaska cruise don't take a large amount of money instead travel using traveler's checks. You can replace traveler's checks in the event of theft but you can not replace money. A vacation is not the time to have your reserve spending cash gone for good.

Alaska Cruise Tours offers the best in Alaska experiences. These tours combine both worlds into one fabulous vacation package. Spend time on the water enjoying a cruise of Alaska, then finish off your vacation with a land tour. Or take in the land tour prior to your cruise, then set sail on your luxurious cruise to put the finishing touches on your dream vacation.

Your Alaska Cruise Tour can begin in one of two ways. You will begin in Vancouver if you wish for your cruise to take part first. From Vancouver you will cruise up to Seward. In Seward you land portion will begin. The other option you have is to begin your vacation in Anchorage and take the land portion of your vacation first. When your land portion is over you will travel by motor coach to Seward and from there your cruise portion will begin. You will cruise from Seward to Vancouver.

What you see and do on your Alaska Cruise Tour is dependent upon what cruise line you choose and also what tour package you choose. Also when taking your land portion of your vacation or while stopping in ports of call you can choose to take part in more of what Alaska has to offer that are separate from what the cruise line has placed in your package.

Alaska has an abundance of wildlife and while in Denali National Park take the time to take a bus tour and see Alaska's brown bears in their natural habitat. While on your land portion of your trip or even while taking time in a port of call on your cruise, don't miss out on the chance to do some adventurous kayaking. While kayaking keep your eyes open for the caribou and even the bears that are on the arctic tundra. while you can see the glaciers from your ship while on your cruise, you can really get up close to them while on your land tour or while at a port of call during your cruise. For some adventure you can walk onto some of these glaciers.

What you choose to do is really up to you. This is your vacation so you can do as little or as much as you want. Most cruise lines will spend the day in the ports of call, so this gives you a chance to see and do something that you didn't get to do during your land portion.

The cruise lines that you can choose from that offer the Alaska Cruise Tours are Celebrity Cruises, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises. Also Cruise West offers the Alaska Cruise Tours in a smaller ship with only 100 passengers or less. The prices for these cruise tours varies depending on the cruise line and the time of year you will be taking your cruise.

The best time of year to take an Alaska Cruise Tour is starting in late May all the way through to the end of August. Sometimes it may be ideal still at the very beginning of September.

Taking an Alaska cruise is different from cruising to the Bahamas. For one thing the weather on an Alaskan cruise is different from that of the Bahamas. Also when cruising to the Bahamas there is for the most part nothing to look out at other than sky and water. When taking an Alaska cruise on the other hand, there is so much to see. Things such as awe inspiring glaciers, snow covered mountains and the wildlife that you can see from your ship is that of pure nature in an all natural habitat.

It is that scenery that will have you out on deck straining to see a Grizzly bear on the shore hunting for salmon or a humpback whale coming up for air. As the scenery and wildlife are ever changing you may not want to miss a moment of it by being inside.

Now that you know where you will be spending a great deal of your Alaska cruise, you need to look at what type of attire is appropriate for an Alaskan cruise. You may cruise Alaska at anytime year round but the most appropriate times depending on your type of cruise is from April to early September. During these times the weather in Alaska runs from a low of around 40 degrees to a high of around 75 degrees. The climate in Alaska is ever changing so one must be prepared for anything. Dress in winter layers when on deck and out on a shore excursion and take off and add back on clothing as needed to keep you comfortable in the temperature that you are in at the moment. These items include t-shirts, long sleeve shirts and a wind breaker. A winter coat may be needed depending on if you are cruising during normal cruising season or if you are cruising during the winter. Some shore excursions may take you into arctic areas so make sure to have thermal pants on under your jeans or trousers. Heavy socks and hiking boots will be appropriate for these types of excursions.

During your cruise of course you will need the appropriate cruise attire. Most cruise lines have a formal night on at least one night of your Alaska cruise and formal attire will be required. For men this usually means a suit and tie or tuxedo and for the ladies this means a cocktail dress or evening gown. Women may also wear an appropriate pantsuit during formal nights.

As with other times the dress is usually kept to a resort type of casual. Resort casual includes attire such as a sports shirt and slacks, dresses and skirts and pantsuits. Most cruise lines forbid t-shirts, shorts and swimsuits in the dining room. Since most cruise lines have indoor pools that are heated a swimsuit should be brought along so that you can enjoy a swim in the pool.

Just remember that despite the temperature at that moment, the weather in Alaska can change at any moment. So apply your clothes when on deck and on shore excursions in layers so that you are always comfortable and ready for any climate change.

During your Alaska cruise you will be stopping at various ports of call. These ports of call will give you the chance to enjoy some shore excursions that you may find of interested. Which ports of call you stop at will be dependent upon which cruise line and what cruise type that you take. Most cruise lines will allow for a day of sightseeing and such at each port of call that they cruise stops at.

Anchorage has a lot of adventure to offer during your shore excursion. Full of Alaskan history Anchorage, has many places that will allow for you to learn of its history. Information on Alaskan culture can be obtained at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, were you can see traditional structures of native villages along with many informative exhibits. For those that are feeling adventurous and wanting to see the remote wilderness and Alaskan wildlife, then take a bear viewing tour. This tour will take you in a floatplane approximately 70 miles away from Anchorage to the Lake Clark Wilderness Preserve. From there you will go by boat with a guide through the area searching for bears.

Haines port of call will have you deep in native legends and folklores. Have a drink in one of the local bars and be spun a web of tales on ancient tribal legends. Haines is also a remarkable port of call during your Alaska cruise because it offers great dining and awe inspiring museums. You will come away with a wealth of ancient knowledge during your shore excursion in Haines.

When taking an Alaska cruise you can do so on a large ships such as a Princess cruise line or you take on cruise on a smaller ship such as Cruise West Spirit of 98. Depending on the type of atmosphere and the experience you want a smaller ship may be for you or it may not be. When deciding you need to look at what each style of cruise ships have to offer.

Passenger Accommodations are one thing you need to look at. Do you want a cruise with a large amount of people or a cruise with a smaller amount of people. Cruise West accommodate around 114 passengers on an Alaska cruise. The Princess on the other hand being such a large ship can carry around 2, 400 passenger in Alaska.

How do you prefer to dress for dinner is another aspect that changes with the size of the cruise ship you are on. A smaller cruise ship such as the Cruise West keeps everything casual even at meal times. The larger ships such as the Princess cruise line have formal nights that require that you are dressed in formal attire for dinner on those nights. So this should be looked into when making your decision on the size of the cruise line you which to take your Alaska cruise. Also during all other times larger ships require resort casual attire where as with the smaller cruise ships such as the Cruise West, blue jeans and such are the normal attire.

The cost of the smaller ships is different from the large cruise ships. A smaller cruise ship such as the Cruise West will run you around $3,800 for 8 nights in an ocean view stateroom. A larger ship like the Princess will run around $1,200 for 7 nights.

If you are wanting to see the remote areas of Alaska then a smaller ship is the answer for you. The Cruise West Alaska cruises will almost always take you through remote and narrow areas such as the Wrangell Narrows and even the Peril Straight. Also on a smaller ship you will get the chance to stop at ports that the larger ship lines can not access. A very amazing experience that the smaller cruise lines offer is the chance to anchor near a out of the way cove and take the gangway onto shore.

The cruise schedule on a smaller ship is different from that of a larger ship line. So depending on what type of schedule you want will help determine what type of cruise ship size is right for you. The smaller ships will change it's schedule to accommodate the majority of the passengers desires to spend more time whale watching or sightseeing of other wildlife. Also with being a smaller ship the captain of the ship is able to get close to glaciers or even get close to waterfalls. All of these things are not able to be done with larger ship lines.

Larger ship lines offer a lot of amenities such as casinos, spas, dance halls and much more activities for you to enjoy on your Alaska cruise. The smaller cruise lines do not offer things like a casino. But gambling is not allowed in Alaska so the larger cruise lines will close down the casino anyway while in Alaska and only open them back up during the times when the ship is in international waters. The smaller cruises focus more on the Alaska trip and what it has to offer than what kind of entertainment they offer that is resort style. The size of the smaller ship lines such as the Cruise West is around 295 feet long and around 5000 tons. This allows for you to be closer to the marine life that you will see during your Alaska cruise. The larger cruise lines such as the Princess is around 900 feet long and around 77,000 tons.

So end the end the size of cruise ship you go with and the cruise lines that you choose from will be based on what you are looking for in your Alaska cruise.

As with anything in life, an Alaska cruise has some rules, regulations and safe issues that must be adhered to. This is all in place to keep all passengers safe and allow for all passengers to enjoy their cruise. Some things that are in place are in place because of legal issues. These of course are not a complete list of rules and regulations as all cruise lines have their own set of rules and regulations, therefore you must confer with the cruise line you choose to take your cruise on for a full list.

A major issue you must take into account is to not bring any illegal drugs aboard the cruise ship with you. These drug are illegal and can cause you serious legal troubles when you get caught with them. Even a small personal stash will lead to serious legal consciences. There for avoid bring any type of drug that is deemed illegal aboard the cruise ship.

Do not harass the other guests aboard the cruise line. Staff are in place to deal with any trouble makers. Everyone on the ship is there to enjoy their Alaska cruise and no cruise line will tolerate anyone upsetting the other passengers. There for if you do have any conflict with another passenger, try your best to avoid that person. This will keep you from ending up in trouble while on your vacation.

Do not flash around large amounts of cash while on your cruise. This applies to on the cruise ship and also while on shore at any ports of call. By flashing around large amounts of cash you are not gaining bragging rights over the amount of money you have. Instead you are setting yourself up and the others in your party for getting robbed or physically hurt. So use common sense when paying for merchandise or services that you have received.

While on shore at any port of call avoid wandering off on your own into remote areas. Alaska is famous for its remote areas full of wildlife. The wild animals can prove to be dangerous and you should never be out in the remote areas alone. When in remote areas you should have an experienced guide with you that knows the area very well. The terrain can also prove to be dangerous and without someone with you then getting help can become nearly impossible in the event of an emergency.

Avoid feeding the wild animals unless told you can do some by your tour guide while on a shore excursion. Most parks forbid the feeding of wild animals for safety reasons. This should be adhered to even when out in the remote areas of wilderness. There may be a chance to feed the animals during a shore excursion that you take part in. In this event it is fine as long as you follow the instructions of your tour guide. Other times avoid feeding them anything. And make sure when eating outside that you pick up all your trash and food. This should not be left behind because of the animals and also because it pollutes the beautiful untouched wilderness of Alaska.
