Wherever you currently reside, you may someday get the urge to pack up and travel to a foreign country to experience something new. International travel offers many appeals such as the opportunity to experience the culture of another country and to learn a little bit about how natives of other countries live, think and view natives of your home country. This travel can be an eye opening experience for those who are new to international travel. It can also unfortunately commonplace for those who have the luxury of traveling internationally often. When you travel to another country, you should always be aware of your surroundings and you should exercise a certain amount of caution to help to ensure your safety.

Most foreign countries are not necessarily dangerous but you should be aware that as a foreign travel you could be targeted as a victim for any number of crimes. Whether you are seen as vulnerable and become a victim of a violent crime or whether you are simply seen as being distracted and become the victim of a pickpocketing or other financial crime there are ways to help ensure that these situations do not occur. This article will serve to offer a few tips for traveling safely in a foreign country.

Researching the area that you will be traveling to ahead of time is important for maintaining your safety. While many popular tourist attractions are relatively safe, it is always wise to understand what, if any, dangers exist in this area. There are some locations that are notorious for unrest and violence and these may not be your best options for international travel but there are many other countries that offer relative safety. Reading about the area that you plan to visit, will help you to realize what you should be aware of while on your trip.

Another item to research before your international trip is where you can find medical assistance if you have a medical emergency while you are traveling. Many modern societies have adequate medical facilities available but it may take some work to find these facilities. It is advisable to do this before your trip instead of trying to find someone willing to assist you when you are dealing with the stress of an emergency situation.

Remaining aware of your surroundings is one of the most obvious things you can do to help to maintain your safety during an international vacation. Many travelers in a foreign land find themselves becoming distracted while on vacation and this makes them vulnerable to becoming the victim of a crime. It is very important to not allow yourself to become distracted while you are traveling. You should always try to look alert and confident so that those around you do not realize you are uneasy and decide to prey on you.

Although traveling alone can be an excellent experience, it is recommended that you travel with a companion to stay safe. Although many popular tourist attractions are very safe, it is usually not recommended that you wander around in the nighttime alone. For this reason it is advisable to travel with at least one other companion.

Foreign countries may not necessarily be more dangerous than your native land but the fact that you are a foreigner may put you at risk of more danger. Some simple tips such as remaining aware of your surroundings, researching your destination ahead of time and traveling with a companion are very useful for helping you to stay safe during foreign travel.

Unfortunate but true, women and young students traveling in Europe are targeted more often by criminals, and experience the most trouble with government officials as well as locals of the country. Students also experience higher health risks while traveling in Europe, simply through the activities that most students engage in. For these and other reasons, it is necessary to introduce a few travel safety tips specific to students and women.

First, if you are a student traveling for the first time, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. First, not every adult can be trusted, even if they appear to be friendly and helpful. Especially if you have grown up in a small town where everyone knows everyone else, this can be a difficult concept to grasp and remember. However, remembering that you cannot trust everyone is the first step in remaining safe in Europe.

Second, you should know at least some basic bits and pieces of the language common to the country you are visiting. If you do become lost or need some type of assistance, you will be less likely to get it if you cannot communicate your need to those around you. It is best that you at least know how to ask for directions, ask for the US Embassy, request police or governmental assistance with a crime, or yell for help in the case that a crime is in progress.

To avoid run ins with local government officials, familiarize yourself with the laws for the country and area that you will be visiting. Make sure that your partying stays under control and within legal limits. Avoid illegal drugs, and refrain from drinking. Even if drinking is legal for your age group in that country, it is best to avoid it. Drinking alcohol clouds your judgment and can lead to embarrassing or legally troubling situations. It also limits your perceptibility and makes you a more vulnerable target for criminals.

Women especially should avoid walking at night, especially in dark and deserted streets. If you find that you have stayed out too late, take a taxi home. You'll be much safer. When you are walking, taking the bus, or on the train at any time of day or night, be aware of your surroundings. Make sure that you have a way to escape any advance from a potential criminal or rapist, and be aware of everyone around you and what they are doing.

You should also make sure that your personal items and valuables are well hidden and against your frame so that they cannot be easily grabbed. Sewing pockets into your underwear or bra can be a great way to stash money in case of robbery or mugging. You should also try to avoid wearing any jewelry other than a simple wedding ring. If you don't appear to have anything, you will be a less likely target. If someone does try to rob you, hand over your items willingly then run for the most public and well lit area possible. This will protect you from untoward advances from the thief as well as put you in a position to find help.

Most people are aware that the European electrical outlets are different than those in the US. This requires a plug adapter for most of your electronics. However, this is not the only consideration. You see, European electricity's output is twice that of the United States, and even with a plug adapter you can cause a small fire or at least the melting of your electronics without a transformer or wattage converter.

Additionally, not all European countries require the same plug adapters. You will need to research the country that you are visiting and make sure that you purchase the plug adapter for that country. If you will be visiting more than one country and require more than one type of plug adapter, you should keep these plug adapters in separate bags and label them with the country that you will use them in. This will help you to lessen confusion when you actually arrive, and help you avoid a mistake that might cause your electronics, or yourself, to fry with the voltage of the electrical outlet.

To determine if your electronics need a transformer or just a plug adapter, you should check the back of the power brick or the user's manual. This should give you information about the electronics such as what wattage and voltage the electronics item can handle. If the electronics item can only handle a voltage of 110, you will need a transformer in addition to the plug adapter.

Most laptops sense and adjust to the voltage coming through the lap top, and therefore do not require a transmitter. Many electrical items such as digital camera and mobile phone chargers are designed to work in any country and do not require a transformer. However, you should check the user manual for all of your electronics before packing them for your European trip.

Some electronics are better left at home. Hair dryers, for instance, often melt from the voltage of European outlets even with a converter and plug adapter. For these electrical items, you may think about leaving them at home and purchasing new ones in the European country you will be visiting.

In addition to safety, you should also consider that there are fewer electrical outlets in European hotels than in the United States. Electricity is much more expensive in Europe, and to minimize your expenses and the chance of overloading an outlet you should take with you only those electronics and electrical items that are absolutely necessary for your trip. If you can shave with razors instead of your electrical razor, do so. If you want an alarm, use the one on your mobile phone or request a wake up call from the hotel, and leave your alarm clock at home.

As should be the case with all items that you pack for your European travels, you should go through your electronics and other items that require electricity item by item to make sure that you really need that item. You should also check user manuals and make sure that you have all of the converters and plug adapters necessary before you leave for your trip. This will ensure a safe, frustration free vacation in Europe.

With all of the preparation for your trip to Europe, you may not give much thought to how you will get from place to place once you arrive at your main destination. Many transportation options are available once you arrive in Europe, including buses, trains, walking, and taxis. However, not all of these methods of transportation are safe, and there are precautions you should take before using public transportation.

First, you should be aware that most pick pocketing occurs on buses and trains. These overly crowded vehicles are prime hunting grounds for those who want to steal your money, credit cards, and passport. If you do decide to travel by bus or train within Europe, you should make sure that your valuables are safely tucked away where they cannot be seen or easily taken.

Second, while walking may seem like a great way to get from place to place while viewing the sights, it can also be dangerous. If you find yourself lost or in an area with few people, you have become a major target for criminals. Taxis are much safer than other methods of public transportation. However, there is always the chance that you may get a taxi driver or share the taxi with someone that is not all they seem to be. Taxi drivers might try to charge you an unreasonable fair because you are a tourist, or simply try to take your money and valuables.

The best and safest way to travel while in Europe is by renting a car. When you rent a car, you have more options as to where you can go, and what places you can visit. You also have the advantage of not having to worry about unruly or unethical taxi drivers, fellow passengers, or muggers in the streets. Renting a car can be more expensive, but it is defiantly the safest and most convenient method of transportation while in Europe.

If you plan to rent a car in Europe, you will want to make sure that you familiarize yourself with European cars and driving laws and methods before leaving for Europe. Make your reservations for your rental car when you book your flight and hotel for the trip. Make sure that you are aware of any traditions, traffic laws, and general road information before you leave. Be aware of possible insurance requirements and all associated costs before arriving. Some car rental agencies have basic rates, then surprise you with hidden fees. Know the total cost before arrival so that you are adequately prepared.

You will also want to make sure that you have good road maps for all areas that you will travel in. You should also have road maps for the surrounding areas, just in case you take a wrong turn and find yourself somewhere off of your original map. If you become lost and need to ask someone for directions, you will open yourself up to the possibility of being taken advantage of, robbed, or worse.

In the end, your choice of methods of transportation while in Europe will greatly effect the outcome of your stay. Preparing for all possible events, taking safety precautions, and being aware of your options and the pros and cons for each will greatly increase your chances of having an enjoyable visit to Europe without incident.

Before leaving for your trip to Europe, it is very important to visit your physician and discuss your travel plans. Make sure that any health conditions you have will be manageable in the climes that you will be visiting. Additionally, there may be vaccinations that you are required or recommended to get before embarking for Europe. Talking to your physician is a necessary step in preparing for a safe trip to Europe.

There are three main types of vaccinations that you may get before traveling to Europe: routine, recommended, and required. Any vaccinations that you may need should be obtained from your physician four to six weeks prior to your planned trip to Europe. This will give the vaccinations time to take effect, and provide you with more protection.

Routine vaccinations that all adults require are the Tetanus and Diphtheria vaccinations. These vaccinations should be received by all adults every ten years. If your vaccinations are not up to date or over due, you should make sure that you receive them before leaving for Europe. Children require further routine vaccinations, and should also be up to date on their shots before leaving for Europe.

There are no required vaccinations for travel to Europe. However, there are recommended vaccinations that your physician may deem necessary based on your health conditions and health risk assessment. Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B shots may be recommended by your physician. Hepatitis A can be contracted through touch, and can be common in some areas of Europe.

Hepatitis B is transmitted through medical care, blood, and sexual encounters, and may not be necessary. If there is any chance that you may have sexual encounters with locals while in Europe, or if you have a medical condition that may force you to seek medical treatment while in Europe, it may be a good idea to discuss this vaccination option with your physician.

Another recommended vaccination may be gotten from your physician for the Avian flu. This is a common illness in many overseas countries, European countries included. When you speak with your doctor, you should be completely honest about your itinerary and the activities you plan to engage in. This will help your doctor assess your health risk, and recommend any vaccinations he or she feels are necessary. There may be others not listed here, so do not assume that you know best and try to rush this very important doctor's appointment.

While you are there, you should also obtain a list of your medications and their scientific names from your doctor. Brand names and generics may not be the same where you are traveling. In the event that your medication is lost or stolen and you need to obtain more, you may need to know the exact scientific name for the medication in order to get it replaced. You may also ask your doctor for an additional prescription that will allow you to take extra medication just in case you are delayed for any reason.

Keep this additional medication as well as a copy of your medication list separate from your original list and medications. This way you will be able to get the medical attention or medications you need in the case that you lose your medication and lists.

Exchanging your currency may seem like an easy enough task, and not something that requires a lot of thought. However, there are many things to consider financially before embarking on travels to European countries. Information about currency rates, safe currency exchanges, and how to avoid scams is important knowledge to have before going to Europe and actually engaging in currency exchanges.

First, you cannot expect to rely on credit cards alone for your transactions in Europe. While some merchants will be equipped to handle credit cards, many merchants will require payment with the national currency. You should go to Europe with plenty of cash in addition to your credit cards so that you are prepared for currency exchange as necessary.

Second, you should make yourself aware of currency exchange rates before leaving for your trip. This will help you calculate the amount of money that you should take with you. Most European countries now use the Euro as their national currency. When exchanging from US dollars to Euros, you will discover that the US dollar has less value than the Euro. In addition to exchange rates, you will also have to pay a commission or fee for the transaction. Take all of the expenses into account when deciding how much money to take with you on your trip to Europe.

Third, you should be aware of ways to stretch your US dollars when exchanging currency in Europe. While airports and hotels are convenient places to have your currency exchanged, you will often pay for that convenience in the form of high commissions and transaction fees. There are many other safe places to exchange your currency, such as banks and other national financial institutions.

You should also make sure that the person completing the transaction shows you their calculations and how they came up with the amount of money that you are getting in exchange for your US currency. You should also make sure that you agree with the transaction amounts before handing over your hard cash. Once you hand it over, it is gone for good, and the transaction is completed no matter what.

Finally, you should be aware of safety measures for exchanging your currency. There are many places to exchange your currency while in Europe, both shady and on the up and up. The safest places to exchange your currency are hotels, airports, and banks. You should not exchange large amounts of currency, or exchange currency where there are many suspicious people milling about watching your transaction. These actions can lead to muggings once you have exchanged your currency and are leaving the institution.

Additionally, you should keep in mind that you will not get as much for your European currency when exchanging it back to US dollars. Therefore it is best to exchange your currency every couple of days to avoid having too much foreign currency in your pockets. Do not carry your US dollars with you unless you are going to exchange them. This will also help to protect you and make sure that you still have cash in the even that you are mugged, or that you are taken in by shady currency exchange operations.

While the last thing you want to think about when planning your European vacation is what can go wrong, it is best that you are aware of the likelihood of these situations and how to avoid them before your travel to Europe and learn the hard way. Crime against tourists is not an often discussed topic in the news, because these crimes are usually not reported. That is because even if you file a report with the local police, you will likely be safe at home and unable to follow through with the charges, if any are ever pressed.

The most common crimes against tourists are pick pocketing and mugging. Pick pockets can be just about anyone around you. Strangers in a foreign country might talk to you and seem very nice, but when you leave them and hit the next shop, you find that you are missing your wallet. The best way to avoid pick pockets is to avoid overly crowded places like buses and trains, and trust no one.

Mugging usually happens around currency exchange agencies. These thugs watch you enter the agency, and wait for you to come out, following you to a less crowded place where they take everything you have. Other criminals might actually hang around inside currency exchange agencies watching to see how much money people are exchanging. Those who exchange thousands of dollars at one time are the most likely to be mugged as soon as they leave. The best way to avoid these crimes is to conduct currency exchanges in places where there are few by standers. You should also exchange only small amounts every day or every couple of days, and at different locations.

Areas heavily populated by tourists are also targeted by pick pockets and muggers. The best way to avoid these types of crimes is to simply stay away from other tourists. Instead of visiting the normal tourist attractions, submerse yourself in the culture of the country that you are visiting by going to local shops and restaurants where tourists do not typically frequent. You should also avoid bars, night clubs, and secluded areas with few by standers.

Although money can be a prime motivator for crime, passports are often even more likely to be stolen than your valuables. Passports can be altered by the simple changing of a picture, and a way out of the country and into America can be a major reason for crime in some areas. Although you should have your passport on you at all times, you should keep it hidden on your person in a back pack, underneath your shirt, or strapped to your leg underneath your baggy slacks.

Another common crime is simple scamming. These crimes are often not discovered until much later, if ever. Restaurants, shops, and currency exchange agencies may attempt to get more money from you than is actually required for your transactions. The best way to avoid these types of crimes is to be completely familiar with typical prices and the exchange rates between US dollars and Euros or the national currency. If you are aware that a shop owner is trying to haggle you out of more money that something is worth, you will be able to call them on it and pay a lower, more reasonable price.

In order to have a safe and enjoyable visit to Europe, you will want to make sure that you pack the right clothing. The weather in Europe is much more stable than in the United States, regardless of the time of year you plan to travel. Winters do not get as cold, and summers do not get as hot as in the United States. However, there are many items that you may need to prepare for a successful and fun trip to Europe.

First, you will likely want to take some sweaters and jeans, even if you are planning to travel in the summer months. Nights can get chilly in Europe, and even during the day skies are generally very cloudy. Sunny days in Europe are typically few and far between during more visits. You may get lucky and have some sunny, very warm days, however, so plan to take clothing for both cooler and warmer climes.

Second, you will want to take clothing for rainy days, as well as an umbrella. While overall rainfall in Europe is much less than in the United States, there are often days when some rain fall will occur. Better to be prepared than to end up drenched. Other items you may consider are ponchos, hats, and other head coverings.

Third, you will want to take the time of sunrise and sunset into account. In the winter, days are extremely short, with the sun rising well into the morning and setting in the late afternoon. During these times of less sun, warmer clothing will likely be required. In the summer, the days are extremely long, requiring cooler clothing. You may also want to take a sleeping mask with you if you travel to Europe during the summer months, because the sun will likely still be up when you are ready to sleep for the night.

The best way to prepare for the weather in Europe is to check the weather for the area you plan to visit just before leaving. Before you zip up those suitcases, check the long term forecast. You can do this by visiting any number of web sites or watching cable weather channels. You should also check the current weather conditions at the time of your departure and arrival, to determine what clothing may be best for your flight.

If you are planning to spend longer periods of time in Europe traveling through various countries, it will be harder to check an actual weather forecast for your entire trip. You can plan and prepare for the weather for these longer trips by looking up historical or average weather conditions for the areas you are planning to visit during the time of year that you will take your trip. You can often check such weather information via the same weather forecast web sites available for current weather conditions and forecasts.

Overall, it is best to take at least one outfit for each type of weather that you may encounter. Packing one very warm outfit, one neutral outfit, and one very cool outfit will ensure that you are prepared for any weather that may come your way during your travels. You can then pack other clothing in accordance to typical or forecasted weather conditions.

Any vacation to Europe is sure to be full of fun and excitement. But you don't want to be faced with the wrong type of excitement! There are many things that can potentially go wrong when traveling to other countries, including Europe. While you may not be able to avoid all of the things that may and can happen, such as being robbed, you can minimize the effects that it has on your trip and your life in general. You just have to be prepared for anything and everything that might occur.

With that in mind, there are several things that most travelers need and are aware of. Vaccinations, visas and passports, electrical adapters, and other preparations must be made before you leave for your trip to Europe. By taking these precautions, you will be more likely to have a safe trip to Europe.

First, you should make two copies of everything important to your finances, stay in the country, and return to America. This includes copying your credit cards, passport, visa, hotel reservations, and plane reservations for the return flight. You should give one copy to a trusted relative or friend that is staying here in America. Keep the other copy with you, but make sure that it is stowed away in a save place. A bag that will likely stay in your room and not on your person is ideal. You should also keep the copies and the originals separate.

Making copies of these important documents will save you from substantial heartache, legal trouble with local and American authorities, and financial problems. If you are robbed of your important documents or credit cards, you can report them stolen, have them canceled, and still have proof of your identity to that you may return home from your European vacation safely.

Another preparation you should make before leaving for Europe is to call your credit card companies and let them know that you're planning on traveling to a different country. In today's society of identity theft and credit card fraud, credit card companies often deny charges from locations which they do not feel their customers would be making purchases. If you fail to let your credit card companies know that you will be traveling, you may find yourself in Europe without any money or means of getting money.

For safety purposes, you should also make sure that you pack your clothing in accordance with the culture of the areas you will visit. This will help you avoid trouble as you wander about foreign cities. You should also leave any unnecessary valuables at home, so that there is less reason for someone to try to rob you later.

You should also check with the US State Department for travel warnings related to other countries. There are not often travel warnings posted for European countries, but it is better to be safer than sorry. You can also find the location of the US Embassy in each country that you will visit and register your trip with the US Embassy at this web site.

By registering your trip with the US Embassy and knowing the location of those embassies in the areas that you will visit is very important to your safety. In the event that an emergency occurs, either with your family at home or while you are abroad, the US Embassy will be able to intercede on your behalf, locate you quickly, and help you take appropriate action. Getting maps of the areas you will visit and noting the location of the US Embassy on the map is also good preparation for any emergencies that may arise.

For any travel abroad you will need to apply for a passport, as well as a visa for each country you plan to visit. If you already have a passport, make sure that it is valid, and will remain so for at least sixty days. If your passport will expire within two months, you should go ahead and renew it. Renewal processes are easier than applying for a new passport, but you will want to do so at least two months prior to your planned trip to make sure that you will have time to use the passport to get your required visas.

Applying for a new passport can take several months, especially during high travel volume times such as summer time and holidays. To find out what processing times are, you can visit the US State Department website. To obtain a new passport, you will need to apply in person at a passport agency with two photographs, proof of citizenship, and a photo ID such as your driver's license.

Most European countries, such as France, do not require you to get a visa if your visit will be for less than three months. However, if the country you are visiting does require a visa or your stay will be more than three months, you will want to apply for your visa at least one month in advance to make sure that it is processed in time for your trip. Most visa applications require your passport, proof of citizenship, and other proof of identity. To find out whether or not a visa is required, or to find out what documentation is needed to get your visa, visit the US State Department or contact the US Embassy in the country you will be visiting.

We all hope that our trip to Europe will be eventful and exciting, but in a way that allows us to have fun, not face emergency issues. However, sometimes things happen when people travel abroad. Robberies, lost luggage, misplaced carry-on luggage, or a mugging might result in the loss of your passport or visa, as well as other important documents. For these reasons, you should make copies of your travel and identification documents and leave them with a friend back home, as well as keep a copy with you but separate from the originals. This will help prove your citizenship and identity in the case that your actual travel documents are lost or stolen.

In the event that your passport or visa are lost or stolen, there are steps that will be necessary in order to continue your stay in Europe or return to the United States. The first thing you will need to do is contact or visit the US Embassy closest to the area of Europe that you are visiting. You will need to apply for a new passport or visa, furnishing the copies of your identification documents that you made. You will also need to write and sign an affidavit that gives details about the incident where your passport and visa was lost or stolen. Other documentation or verification may be required.

You cannot re-enter the United States, nor safely travel throughout Europe without a passport. If you lose your passport or if it is stolen, you need to contact the US Embassy nearest to you immediately, or as soon as you are aware that your passport is gone. This is important for your safety and for your return to the United States. In most cases, replacing the lost or stolen passport while you are in Europe is not difficult, but it should be taken care of immediately nonetheless.
