Accommodations in New York City vary from budget hotels, rental units and hostels. For those who want luxury, however, New York City is home to the most lavish hotels in the world. Some of the best luxury hotels in which to stay while in New York City include the following:

The Waldorf Astoria. This landmark, luxury hotel was built in 1931 and was a renovated combination of two hotels, the Waldorf and the Astoria, which were both built in the 1890s. It features over 1,400 rooms and suites as well as all modern amenities. All of the rooms are designed differently but retain the original art-deco style. The Waldorf Astoria also features the Presidential Suite and Royal Suite, both with luxurious dining rooms and living rooms.

The Waldorf Astoria has several bars, lounges and three elegant restaurants. Room prices range from $237 to $1,114 per night, which is a bit less than many of the other luxury hotels in the city. However, the Waldorf Astoria is an integral part of New York History.

The Four Seasons Hotel. Located on East 57th Street, in mid-town Manhattan. The Four Seasons hotel has 368 rooms, 63 suites and features a luxury spa, marble baths, and a fitness facility. The Four Seasons is convenient to both business and shopping as it is located between both Park Avenue and Madison Avenue. The interior of the hotel is exquisitely decorated in ultra-modern style and features fine dining facilities and other amenities one would expect to find in a five-star hotel. Hotel rates range from $450 to $2100 per night.

The Hotel Plaza Athenee is located on Manhattan's Upper East Side. It is close to Central Park, shopping and several museums. The Athenee has 149 rooms and suites and features twice daily maid service, fine dining, lounges and many attractive amenities. Rooms are decorated elegantly and feature fine linens and marble baths. Rates range from $500 to $3,600 per night.

The New York Palace contains 900 rooms and was built in 1882. The Palace is located in midtown Manhattan on luxurious Park Avenue. It is close to Central Park as well as shopping and sightseeing and offers various attractions. In addition to offering luxury amenities, the hotel features a spa, restaurant and fitness center as well as several lounges. Rates for the New York Palace range from $225 to $1,600 a night.

The Peninsula Hotel was built in 1905 and conforms to the elegance of a bygone era. Despite the careful retention of its original splendor, the hotel offers modern conveniences, including a pool and a spa. Located in Midtown Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, rates for the hotel range from $425 to $2,450 per night.

The Ritz Carlton – Central Park. Located on Central Park West, the Ritz Carlton offers guest rooms and deluxe suites overlooking Central Park. This five star hotel offers every luxury one would imagine in accommodations of this caliber including a spa, health club, fine dining and lounges. Each room is meticulously decorated with fine fabrics and furnishings. Rates for a hotel of this quality are reasonable at $495 to $1,795 per night.

St. Regis Hotel. The St. Regis Hotel is another early 20th century hotel decorated in the beaux arts tradition and is a national landmark. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the 256 rooms in the St. Regis are decorated with Louis XIV style furniture and feature robes, slippers and even Butler service. Rates for this hotel, built in 1904, range from $550 to $1,400 per night.

A list of accommodations in New York would not be complete without mentioning The Plaza Hotel. One of the most famous luxury hotels in New York City, the Plaza Hotel, is currently closed to the public while undergoing renovation. The hotel, built in 1907, is immortalized in several films and is the most well-known hotel in New York City.

The Plaza Hotel, located across from Central Park South and is 119 stories tall. It is a national landmark. When re-opened in 2008, it will feature condominium units and 130 hotel rooms.
