New York City offers thousands of restaurants in which to eat. Cuisines range from the exotic, to simple, from inexpensive eateries to luxurious restaurants.

Those wanting the ultimate in New York Dining will want to visit at least one New York's most famous restaurants. These include The Russian Tea Room, Tavern on the Green, Elaine's, The Rainbow Room, and The Four Seasons.

The Russian Tea Room is a five star restaurant located at 150 West 57th Street in Manhattan. The Russian Tea Room opened in 1927 and served some of the most famous people in theater, arts and ballet. The restaurant closed briefly and recently re-opened. It has been renovated, but the interior still reflects the feel of a bygone era.

The menu at the Russian Tea Room features mainly Russian cuisine and offers 12 different types of caviar, including Beluga, Osetra, and California Sturgeon. Appetizers include Golden Borscht, Russian King Crab Studen, Steamed Mussels with vodka and smoked salmon. Main dishes include Caviar Omelet, Shrimp Pelmeni with tomato consommé, and Burger Pojazrski. There is an extensive wine list and private dining rooms available in this fine, historic restaurant. Reservations on weekends generally are booked several weeks in advance, but are easy to get on weekdays.

Tavern on the Green is located in Central Park, near Turtle Lake. It is best known for its completely glass enclosed "Crystal Palace" room, although it contains several other dining rooms and also offers private accommodations. Tavern on the Green, while offering delicious, eclectic cuisine, is more known for its magnificent ambiance than anything else. The restaurant was originally built in 1870 and has been renovated throughout the years as well as immortalized in several motion picture films. They offer an extensive wine list, fabulous desserts and entrees including Crabcakes with Avocado Sauce and Lobster Bisque.

Depending upon the season, reservations for weekends can take anywhere from two to three weeks; however, reservations for lunch or weeknights are relatively easy to get.

Elaine's is located on Manhattan's upper east side at 1703 Second Avenue and is more noted for attracting literary figures and other celebrities than its cuisine. Elaine's was a hot spot in the 1970s and has been featured in several Woody Allen and Neal Simon Films. Some said the restaurant was "dead" in the 1990s, but it continues to thrive and still attracts some of the top names in the entertainment industry. Entrees range from an assortment of fish, chicken and pasta dishes and is well known for its truffled seafood salad. Elaine's has a full bar, is open late and the attire is casual. Although it is not a swanky, five star restaurant, it is a great place to visit, even for a drink. And one never knows who may be dining in Elaine's on any given night.

The Rainbow Room, located in the heart of Manhattan on the 64th floor at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, opened in 1934 and features a view of the city combined with dancing to Big Band Music. Having dinner at the Rainbow Room is an event; you will feel you have slipped back into a bygone era. A full course dinner is $200 for adults and includes a choice of appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. The cuisine is American and the menu offers a variety of beef, lamb and seafood specialties including Roasted Black Cod with Baby Artichokes. Although a bit pricey, the experience of dining and dancing at the elegant Rainbow Room is something not easily forgotten. There is a dress code one might expect in such an establishment and reservations are necessary, but not difficult to attain.

The Four Seasons Restaurant is located in the Four Season's Hotel in Mid-Town Manhattan. This five-star restaurant offers an eclectic mix of American foods in an elegant, modern setting. There are several fine dining rooms, including private accommodations. The menu varies with each season and includes steak and seafood dishes as well as both vegetarian and vegan choices. The Four Seasons is considered one of New York City's finest eating establishments and has a dress code. Reservations should be made at least a week in advance.

New York City is probably the best city in the world to experience fine dining and literally offers something for every taste.
